Ottawa will look to take a stranglehold on their best-of-seven series versus Pittsburgh with a win in game four.
Goalie Craig Anderson has been red-hot for the Senators and the Penguins world class goal scorers have gone stone cold.
Through their first seven playoff games, the Penguins were averaging more than four goals a game. But ever since Sidney Crosby left game three versus Washington with a concussion the numbers have gone down, even as he’s made his return to the lineup.
They’ve scored two goals or less in seven of their last eight games and just one each in the first three games of this series.
Meanwhile in beating Pittsburgh 5-1 on Wednesday, Ottawa got their scoring on track. Although they are known for their tight defensive play, this was their sixth game scoring four or more goals in these playoffs.
The Senators had a dream first period in front of their home crowd. Mike Hoffman scored his fifth of the playoffs just 48 seconds into the game. Three other players scored in a 2:14 second span midway through the period for a 4-0 lead and an early night for Penguins goalie Marc Andre Fleury.
Ottawa’s speed and tenacious defense have managed to neutralize the Pittsburgh attack. Meanwhile they have also exposed the Penguins weak link, which is an undermanned defense especially with the long-term injury to their number one defenseman Kris Letang.
This is the first time the Penguins have trailed in a series and I expect their leadership group and key scorers to step up and deliver a game four win.
