The New York Yankees will attempt to even their ALDS series and go back to the Bronx with some momentum as they get ready to resume hostilities with the Cleveland Indians with Game 2 set to be staged Friday afternoon at 5 p.m. ET on the MLB Network and live from Progressive Field in Cleveland.
After opening the floodgates with eight runs against Minnesota in the wild card game back on Tuesday, the Yankees’ bats lay silent as they were shutout 4-0 in the opener of their series on Thursday in Cleveland. The Yankees managed just three hits in the game and were struck out 14 times in the loss.
Indians’ skipper Terry Francona looks like a genius with the selection of Trevor Bauer as his Game 1 starter. Bauer carried a no-hitter in the sixth inning but eventually finished with 6 2/3 scoreless innings with two hits allowed and 8 strikeouts. Now, the Yankees will have to face the hottest pitcher in baseball in ace Corey Kluber on Friday.
LH CC Sabathia (14-5, 3.69 ERA) will make his 20th postseason start as he takes the mound for the Yankees while RH Corey Kluber (18-4, 2.25 ERA) will look to shine again in the playoffs as he gets the call for Game 2 for the Indians.
Sabathia will participate in his eight postseason series when he treads the mound for Game 2. The 37-year old is 9-5 with a 3.65 ERA in 19-career starts and a World Series ring when the Yankees won it all in 2009. Sabathia enters the game having won his last three games in which allowed a combined 5 runs on 14 hits in 17 2/3 innings. He hasn’t started a game this season against his former team. The 16-year pro is 4-3 with a 3.65 ERA in 11-career starts against Cleveland.
Kluber has been nothing short of brilliant in last year’s postseason in which he kept a 4-1 record with an amazing 0.75 ERA in five starts before running out of gas in Game 7 of the World Series against the Cubs in which he allowed 4 runs in 4 innings in a no-decision. The 31-year old won his two starts against the Yankees when he registered a one-run complete game and lasted until the 8th with 2 runs in the other. The 6-year pro is 5-1 with an impressive 1.80 ERA in 7-career starts versus New York.
