The reeling Philadelphia Phillies will look to get back into the swing of things as they prepare to meet the Pittsburgh Pirates in a new three-game series with the opener set to be staged Friday night at PNC Park in the Steel City. The Phillies will be looking to snap a four-game losing skid as they end a two-series road trip.
Unfortunately for Philadelphia, they were up against the hottest team in baseball in their recent set as they were promptly swept by the Texas Rangers who registered a league-best 9th consecutive win in an 8-4 rout of the Phils in the series finale on Thursday. With the loss, Philadelphia could end up sharing last place in the NL East with Miami.
The Pirates, who are in last place in the NL Central, did the Phillies a favor by winning their rubber match 10-4 against Washington on Thursday. It was the Pirates’ fourth win in their last five games after a fruitless sequence when they had lost six consecutive contests.
After a decent month of April where he notched four victories in five starts while boasting a superb 1.80 ERA, Hellickson has struggled mightily in May never reaching the sixth inning in three starts. The 30-year old allowed a combined 12 runs in 13 2/3 innings with a 7.90 ERA and 7 homeruns along with a loss and 2 no-decisions during that stretch. Hellickson is 2-0 with a 2.76 ERA in 3 career starts against the Pirates.
Williams’ first career start wasn’t pretty when he gave up six runs on seven hits with two long balls in just 3 innings of work against the Dodgers back on May 8. His second start was noteworthy as the 25-year old only gave up a run on four hits in five frames to collect his first win as a starter. Primarily a reliever to begin his career, Williams will face the Pirates for the first time in his career.
