The Chicago Cubs snapped a three-game losing streak Saturday afternoon and will attempt to snatch the rubber match as they conclude their three-game series against the Washington Nationals with the finale of this stint set to be quarreled Sunday afternoon at Wrigley Field in Chicago.
The Nationals took an early 1-0 lead with Bryce Harper’s 28th homerun of the season but the fun didn’t last long for the Nats as the Cubs got to starter Edwin Jackson in a hurry by crossing the plate four times in the bottom of the frame and finally held on for a 7-4 victory in the second game of this series Saturday.
The Nationals, who end a six-game road trip tomorrow, have suddenly lost three of their last four games and will start and important four-game series against their pursuers in the NL East as they host the Marlins Monday night. Tomorrow’s finale will be the last between the two NL rivals with each club having won three games apiece.
RH Erick Fedde (0-1, 15.75 ERA) will make another spot start in the series’ finale for the Nationals while LH Jon Lester (8-6, 3.96 ERA) looks for his first win in August as he gets the call for the Cubs.
Fedde, who was promoted by the Nationals from Triple-A Syracuse, made his first career start last Sunday in place of the injured Stephen Strasburg and now will make another one in lieu of Gio Gonzalez who is on paternity leave. The 24-year old, who was drafted 18th overall in the 2014 draft, held 3.72 ERA in 27 games at Double and Triple-A levels in 2017. His first career start didn’t go as planned as he was rocked for 7 runs across 10 hits in 4 innings against Colorado on Sunday.
Lester has settled down nicely since he was tagged for 10 runs (4 earned) without reaching the first inning against Pittsburgh 3 weeks ago. The 33-year old has won three of his last four starts with three of the quality genre since the debacle. Lester didn’t factor in the decision in his lone start this season against Washington but did limit the Nationals a run and 7 strikeouts in six frames. The Tacoma native is 2-1 with a 2.53 ERA in 5-career starts against the Nationals.
