The Chicago Cubs will attempt to get back in the winner circle as they travel to the Bay Area to meet the San Francisco Giants in a three-game series with the opener of this NL showdown set to be staged Monday night at AT&T Park in San Francisco. This will be the second and ultimate series between the two clubs this season.
After losing the opener to the Giants, the Cubs proceeded to win the next three contests in their four-game stint back in Chicago in late May. The Cubs, who started the second half of the season on a tear winning 14 of their first 17 games after the All-Star, have hit a snag lately with four losses in their last five capers.
They still lead the NL Central division but by only half a game over the Milwaukee Brewers. The Giants are obviously in the midst of a lost season as they trail the formidable LA Dodgers by 36 games in the NL West but can play the spoiler role the rest of the season as they did this weekend by taking two of three against Arizona.
RH Jake Arrieta (10-8, 3.88 ERA) will look to get back in the win column as he takes the hill for the Cubs while LH Matt Moore (3-11, 5.80 ERA) will attempt to win his first game in well over a month as he gets the nod in the series’ opener for the Giants.
After an auspicious first three months in which he carded a 7-6 record with a less than flattering 4.67 ERA, Arrieta was more like his old self since then by going 3-2 with an impressive 2.01 ERA in his last six starts. The 31-year old was solid again in his last start despite a loss when he allowed a run on just three hits with 8 strikeouts in seven innings in a 3-0 loss to Arizona last Wednesday. The TCU product is 4-2 with a 1.82 ERA in 6-career starts against the Giants.
Moore has tasted victory only once in his last 14 outings and has only five quality starts during that ugly stretch. The 28-year old is tied for fifth in the majors with 11 losses and he suffered yet another setback in his last start. Moore was tagged for 4 runs across six hits in five innings in 6-1 loss to Oakland back on Wednesday. He also lost to the Cubs in his lone career start against Chicago on May 24.
