The reeling Cincinnati Reds will attempt to avoid a sweep as they get ready to resume hostilities against the Chicago Cubs in the finale of their three-game series set to be staged Thursday afternoon at Wrigley Field in Chicago. The Reds will also look to snap a five-game losing streak in the process.
The Reds started the month of May firing on all cylinders winning 8 of 10 while putting up some impressive offensive numbers. However, this was all happening in their friendly confines of Great American Ball Park but the batting output has not materialized thus far in their current 7-game road trip.
Meanwhile, the Cubs’ bats are slowly getting into rhythm after scoring just 6 runs in their last series against the Cardinals. They have racked up 16 thus far in this series while their starters are also finding their grooves. Surprisingly, the World Series Champions will be looking for their first sweep of the season on Thursday.
Garrett rebounded from his worst career loss to close out April, when he allowed nine runs on 8 hits in 3 1/3 innings at Milwaukee, with two solid starts to commence the month of May. The rookie scattered a combined seven hits with 4 earned runs in 13 frames en route to a no-decision and a win against Pittsburgh and San Francisco. Aside from the rout in Milwaukee, the 25-year old posted 5 quality starts in as many games without ceding more than 2 runs in each outings. He will face the Cubs for the first time as a pro.
Lester is going through one of his poorest stretch of games of his stellar career with just one win in eight starts thus far this season. The veteran just can’t seem to buy a victory although his 3.45 overall ERA dictates otherwise. The Cubs have lost five times with Lester patrolling the mound with three of the losses by a single run. The 33-year still has a lot left in the tank but like all pitchers in this league, he needs the offense to provide some clutch runs once in a while. Lester is 3-1 with a 3.78 ERA in 10 career starts against the Reds.
