The red-hot Texas Rangers will attempt to pursue their outlandish winning form as they put their winning streak on the line with a three-game series against the Detroit Tigers with the opener set to be staged Friday night at Comerica Park in Detroit. The Rangers have now won a league-best 9th consecutive victories with a sweep of Philadelphia Thursday.
It all started with an 11-0 win in San Diego back on May 9 at which point the Rangers were basking in last place in the AL West some 8.5 games behind Houston. Fast-track to Thursday afternoon with an 8-4 victory over Philadelphia to complete their second sweep in a row, Texas is now in second place in the division.
However, with Houston winning nine of its last 10 games, the Rangers only shaved a game out of the Astros’ lead. Meanwhile, after losing a heartbreaker to the Orioles in their opener, the Tigers came back to take the series with two straight one-run victories and could share the AL Central lead after all is said and done in the league late Thursday night.
Although Martinez boasts three quality starts in five appearances this season the 26-year has yet to notch a win during that span. The month of May also hasn’t been kind for the Floridian as he has allowed a combined 13 runs in 17 1/3 innings with a lofty 6.75 ERA along with two losses. Opposing batters have connected for 7 homeruns in Martinez’s last four starts. He is 1-1 with a 5.40 ERA in 2 career starts against the Tigers.
Norris has been unspectacular in seven starts for the Tigers posting run of the mill numbers while constantly failing to go deep in games. The 24-year hasn’t reached the fifth inning in three of those starts while reaching the century mark in pitches in all three. To his credit though, he has only allowed two long balls in 37 1/3 innings since the start of the year. The lefty has faced the Rangers only once in his career back in 2015.
