Minnesota were swept by the Yankees this week and after playing them close in the first game, were outscored 16-5 in the last two. It’s allowed their closest competitors, namely the Angels to stay close in the wildcard race in spite of their own struggles this week against the Indians.

On Wednesday Minnesota lost 11-3 as Aaron Judge hit his 45th home run, one of three hit out by the Yanks. Jorge Polanco had two RBIs in a losing cause.

Detroit is 4-16 in the month of September after selling off their best pitcher in Justin Verlander and best hitter in Justin Upton at the Aug. 31 trade deadline. Coming into this game they were swept by the A’s, losing the last two games by one run each. They did take two of three from the equally inept White Sox over the weekend, but those are their only wins in the past 12 games.

Adalberto Mejia (4-6, 4.62 ERA) pitched his first game in over a month last week against the Blue Jays and lasted just three innings, allowing three runs in a 7-2 loss. He has not pitched more that four innings in any of his last three starts. The Twins have lost four of his last five starts.

Jordan Zimmermann (8-12, 6.18 ERA) has missed the last two weeks with a neck injury and really struggled before going down. In his previous five starts, he allowed 29 runs in 23.2 innings of work. But Detroit won two of those five games including one against the Twins where he allowed seven runs in 3.1 innings.
