The thought of NASCAR holding its playoffs, the Chase for the Championship, without Tony Stewart just doesn’t seem right. But if “Smoke” doesn’t start producing better results, he very well could miss out on the 12-man chase. Perhaps Stewart can get his first win of the season in Sunday’s Industrial Tools 301 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, a track he usually fares well at. Stewart opened at 12/1 to win on Bodog Sportsbook’s NASCAR odds.
Despite some tire and pit issues last week, Stewart finished a respectable 12th at Kentucky. But he has been on the fringe of the Chase all season and is currently 11th in points and winless 18 rounds into the 36-race Sprint Cup season. With only eight races remaining before the Chase field is set for the final 10-race run toward the championship, Stewart is flirting with danger. Remember that that his year only the Top-10 drivers in points are assured of making the Chase.
The 11th- and 12th-place spots are wild cards reserved for the two drivers outside the Top 10 but within the Top 20 in points who have the most wins. Currently, David Ragan (15th) is the only driver in positions 11-20 with a win, but that could change any time. Brad Keselowski (21st) is three points outside the Top 20, and he has a victory to his credit.
The good news is that Tony Stewart has two career wins at New Hampshire and finished second in this race last year. He is one of only five active drivers to have won a Nationwide and Sprint Cup race at the track. Stewart finished 24th after running out of fuel at last fall’s race in Loudon. Overall he has 12 top-five finishes and a series-best driver rating of 113.0 at NHMS.
