The Chicago Cubs begin their quest to repeat as World Series Champions and it all starts with a best of five series against the Washington Nationals with the opener of this NLDS set to be staged on the TBS Station (7:31 p.m. ET) and live from Nationals Park in Washington D.C. This will the first postseason meeting ever between the two clubs.
For the Nationals, they will look to snap a three-series losing streak in the NLDS since they moved to Washington from Montreal back in 2005. The Expos beat the Phillies in the NLDS but lost to the Dodgers in the NLCS in the season-shortened back in 1981. The Cubs will vie for their third straight NLCS.
There were no clear-cut winner in the two series in which Washington and Chicago took part this season. They split a four-game set in Washington back in June while the Nationals took two of three at Wrigley Field back in early August. Chicago is coming into this series having won six of their last eight games while the Nats have lost 4 of their last 6 games.
RH Kyle Hendricks (7-5, 3.03 ERA) will look to maintain his fine form beyond the regular as he gets the call in Game 1 for the Cubs while RH Stephen Strasburg (15-4, 2.52 ERA) makes his second postseason career start for the Nationals.
Hendricks was efficient in the Cubs’ World Series run although the 27-year old posted only one quality start in five trips to the mound but his 1.42 ERA during that stretch speaks for itself. Speaking of quality starts, Hendricks recorded ten of them in his last 11 trips to the mound with the lone blemish being in his last outing in which he allowed 4 runs in 5 frames at Cincinnati. The Dartmouth product is 2-2 with a 2.67 ERA in 5-career starts against the Nationals.
Strasburg’s only postseason start was back in 2014 when he pitched in the NLDS against the Giants. The 29-year allowed a run on 8 hits in 5 innings in a 3-2 loss. The Giants eliminated the Nationals 3-1 that year. Strasburg has been lights out in his last seven starts in which he went 5-0 with an amazing 0.57 ERA during that stretch. Strasburg won his lone start versus Chicago this season. The San Diego native is 1-1 with a 2.08 ERA in 5-career starts against the Cubs.
