Webb Simpson - PGA Golf Hyundai Tournament Betting Odds: Webb Simpson at 8 to 1

You have to win to get in, and the reward for that success takes shape this week in Maui, Hawaii as the 2012 PGA Tour golf betting season gets underway on the Plantation Course at Kapalua Resort with the Hyundai Tournament of Champions.

The restricted field of 28 players – each with at least one victory under their respective belts on the PGA Tour during the 2011 season – is highlighted by a dynamic young pro and a wily veteran headlining the list of contenders to win the first title of the new year.

Webb Simpson, 26, and Steve Stricker, 44, are pegged as the co-favorites at 8/1 odds to win the Tournament of Champions which begins Friday and will continue to unfold through the weekend for a Monday afternoon finish with no cut. Both of those players won two tournament titles last season, as did fellow American Nick Watney who is listed right behind Simpson and Stricker as a top contender to win at 9/1 odds.

There’s quite a gap between that top trio and the next tier of contenders according to the oddsmakers, who have pegged Bubba Watson, Bill Haas, Keegan Bradley, and South Korea’s K.J. Choi as a quartet that offers significant value with each of those 2011 winners listed at 16/1 odds.

Gary Woodland, who defeated Simpson by a single stroke to win his first career PGA Tour title at the Transitions Championship last March, sits alone on the odds list at 18/1 to win the Tournament of Champions.

Defending champion Jonathan Byrd shot a 24-under par total of 268 last year before defeating Robert Garrigus on the second playoff hole to win the tournament title. Byrd is listed at 25/1 odds to repeat the feat.
