The University of Alabama can all but forget of playing in the SEC Championship Game after last week’s loss to No. 1 LSU, yet the Alabama Crimson Tide still have a legitimate shot at potentially playing in the national title game if they can run the table in the regular season and get a little help. The Tide opened as 17-point favorites on Bodog Sportsbook’s NCAA football odds for tonight’s game at Mississippi State.

Ninety-nine times out of 100 a team will win just allowing nine points, but Bama (8-1, 5-1 SEC) couldn’t do much against that LSU defense in losing 9-6 in overtime in the so-called Game of the Century (last time that Alabama allowed nine or fewer points and lost was November 18, 2000, vs. Auburn). That was the second-fewest total points in a game featuring the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the land. Trent Richardson’s Heisman candidacy took a tiny hit as he was held to 89 yards on 23 carries (he did have a good receiving game).
Alabama missed four field goals and squandered another scoring chance by throwing a goal-line interception. Yet the Tide, who still lead the nation in most defensive categories, only fell to No. 3 in the BCS standings. Alabama has not allowed an opponent to score more than 14 points in 10 straight games dating back to the 2011 Capital One Bowl against Michigan State.
The Mississippi State Bulldogs (5-4, 1-4) has been a big-time disappointment this season, essentially losing every time out it has faced a good team. The Mississippi State Bulldogs are on a two-game winning streak and crushed overmatched Tennessee-Martin 55-17 last week. They never trailed, posted 570 yards of total offense in the game and averaged 8.3 yards per play. Mississippi State head coach Dan Mullen again used both starter Tyler Russell and senior Chris Relf at quarterback, and both had success.
Alabama has had Mississippi State’s number recently, winning the past three meetings by a combined 93-20 score. The Bulldogs need to win one of the next three against Alabama, Arkansas or Ole Miss to qualify for a bowl game.
